A summer afternoon vibe at the beach. A big round golden sun falls onto the soft and fluid horizon. An allegro cult of rhythmic heads moving to the same tempo. Or a night filled with emotions, memories, and a gentle brush of light in the darkness. These are a few scenes painted by Worlds Apart, the radiant debut album from the Pretoria-born dance music artist Tennek.
Compiling a handful of singles released over the past two years including fresh unheard tracks, the album explores and exhibits Tennek's distinct aroma of deep, progressive, and afro-centric musical taste and mood over the years of recording. The approach to the styles is absolute organicism, fluidity, and sonic escapism - immaculately produced for daydreamers and lovers of house music and made palatable for the uninitiated.
Tennek has released singles and EPs under notorious labels in the Afro-house scene tailored to move crowds across the globe. On this album, however, he decided to sculpt a more personal and cohesive work of art culminating his years of making music. The attention to the enchanting soundscape stands out throughout the album as each song evokes emotions and powerful sonic qualities that knit the project together. The result is dynamic, genre-bending music that boasts atmospheric chords sprinkled with crisp piano keys over warm orchestral strings and rich vocals layered onto an immersive palette of dance beats.
The zeitgeist is linked to a personal journey across the world, leaving him further apart from the ecosystem of life he is accustomed to. Such a deeply close-to-heart approach fueled the creativity, an awareness of a need to feel safe and okay in turbulent circumstances - to hope for healing and better days void of loss and stagnancy. The album was recorded from 2022 to 2024 between places of isolation, darkness, and stillness - and places of growth, new beginnings, and security.
